After a severe bomb attack by the German Luftwaffe, the Friso capsized on May 12, 1940, with the loss of three of the crew. The wreck was then scuttled by gunfire from the minesweeper Pieter Florisz in position 52' 48" North - 05' 15" East. This photo shows the Friso listing heavily. The minesweeper Abraham van der Hulst, sister of Florisz, is attempting to evacuate the crew. (Collection J. Klootwijk) |
